Tutorial Tuesday: Rainbows, Ruching and Ruffles!

When I first set eyes on our gradient rainbow cotton spandex I knew I had to make something Summery (I’m ever hopeful!)
I decided to make a pair of leggings for my daughter and came across this lovely Butterick See&Sew pattern B6116 which also includes 2 pullover variations - bonus!
The leggings have ruching at the knees and I was really impressed with how easy it was. The gathers are created by machine basting along a gathering line and a length of elastic is simply stitched over the top. In the past I have stretched my elastic between two points, stitched away and hoped for the best whilst apologising to my sewing machine!
The top was very straightforward and I decided to mix the rainbow fabric with some of our turquoise blue solid cotton spandex
Rather than finishing the neck with a narrow hem, I decided to add a contrasting neck band. I then finished this edge with my trusty twin needle, using two different colours. I used the same two colours along the hem too.
My daughter had asked me to make a flower for her hair and I really wanted to use the same fabric. I came across this simple tutorial for making a ruffled flower from thin strips of cotton jersey on a circle of felt by the lovely Ashley of Make It & Love It. I used the leftover scraps and simply stitched it to an old Alice band! This would also make a lovely hair clip or brooch.
The whole outfit only took 2 metres of fabric (1m of Gradient Rainbow Cotton Spandex Blend Knit Fabric & 1m of Turquoise Blue Solid Cotton Spandex Knit Fabric) so it's cheap to make and only took me a couple of hours!  I think the finished look is great, colourful, funky and fashionable (comfy too according to my daughter!).
I used Cotton Lycra for this project but you could also use a Cotton Jersey. Some fabric suggestions below.
