New Vegan Leather, Interview with Rachel Pinheiro & Inspiration board

Today we are releasing 3 new colours (Red, Burgundy & Navy Blue) to add to our existing range of Faux Vegan Leather.
 Red Burgundy Navy Blue
Copper Silver Gold Black Black (Stretch)
To celebrate our new arrivals, the talented Rachel Pinheiro from House of Pinheiro has very kindly given us some brilliant tips for sewing with our leather, and also made an inspiration board on Pinterest with loads of amazing images and ideas for high fashion items you can make with either our Vegan Leather or other Knit Fabrics -

Vegan leather, outside the leggings box.

Hi fellow makers, my name is Rachel and I blog over House of Pinheiro. Today I would like to talk to you about the increasing possibilities for sewing with vegan leather.
Besides the ecological advantages, there are so many project possibilities beyond leggings.

Think circle skirts, racer back tops, dungarees, culottes, jackets. Honestly any pattern you have would be suitable to actually sew using leather, but try to avoid designs with loads of bulk or too many seams.

If you never sewn with vegan leather there are a few tips I can share -

1.  The fabric can get damaged with pin holes so I recommend using plastic clips. Yes, the ones used by quilters.

2.  Very sharp scissors or rotary cutters will ensure a really nice finish. You don’t need to hem if you don’t want it.

3.  Use a ball point needle, size 11.

4.  Polyester thread works best.

5.  Use a plastic, teflon or walking foot. This will help sewing a smooth seam.

6.  You can lightly press your seams with a tea towel protecting the fabric and very low setting on the iron. Do not press the iron directly on the fabric.

For more ideas you can check my inspiration board. Enjoy exploring this fun fabric.
Rachel has used our Copper Vegan Leather to make a stunning Leather Skirt from Makers Atelier: The Essential Collection Sewing With Style and our Black Stretch Vegan Leather for a cool, self drafted, racer back leather top -

Rachel has also answered some questions we had, to find out a little bit more about her...
Our Red Gingham Jersey

Tell us a little about yourself?
I think everyone knows I'm Brazilian. My professional background is not creative in the traditional sense. I have over 15 years supply chain experience in the manufacturing industry where I have worked for big multinationals like IBM and Cummins. Back in 2012 I achieved a first on my MBA in Creative Industries.

What inspired you to start sewing/your blog?
I had a health issue that grounded me away from traveling the world for work and I needed a new challenge.

What are your goals for the future?
I haven’t seriously wrote my blog for over a year now. My main joy comes from sharing and helping increase the love for sewing. Today most of my interaction is over Instagram (follow Rachel here). I do hope to have a YouTube channel in the future.

Our Lattice Ponte De Roma

What inspires you/what would you describe as your design aesthetic?

I love learning new skills and experimenting so you will find that all over my wardrobe.
My aesthetic is modern and fashion forward.

What is your favourite thing about sewing?
The ability to create something amazing.

What is your least favourite thing about sewing or your biggest challenge?
My bad back complains about tracing and cutting.

Massive thanks to Rachel for her time and inspiration, we love everything she does!  You can follow Rachel on her website, Instagram (@houseofpinheiro), You Tube, and Facebook.
