Customer Spotlight: Bubba Baby

Today we have an interview with the multi talented Laura from Bubba Baby.

Laura, an architect by trade, only started sewing 2 years ago, but thanks to divine inspiration has started her own business producing gorgeous pram/breast feeding covers.

Tell us a bit about yourself Laura...
I live in Dublin with my husband and 2 children.
My background is in Architecture and Design. I’m a creative person and I have worked on a variety of different projects from designing Imaginosity Children’s Museum in Dublin to commercial and residential projects. My father is also an architect so I followed in his footsteps.

What inspired you to start sewing?
I have only been sewing for two years and I wish i learnt as a child as it is a super skill to have.  I have been creative forever, I lived for arts and crafts as a child. I would make clothes for my Barbies or rip up jeans and hand sew handbags. Later I would hand sew curtains for my son and then my daughter. At this stage I knew I needed to learn how to use a sewing machine.

How did you start your business and where did the name come from?
I started making the covers because someone coughed on my newborn while she was in her buggy while I was standing in a queue with shopping. I wanted to create a protective layer from germs, unwanted hands, direct sunlight, wind and light rain.

Bubba Baby has two meanings - Bubba in my house means baby, so it’s like saying Baby Baby. But I also wanted it to sound like a bubble baby, a bubble around the baby.  The covers double as breast feeding covers and also can be used on shopping trolleys so they are multi purpose!

What inspires you/what would you describe as your design aesthetic?
A lot of things inspire me design wise.  In my line of work I have to be open to all different styles. I personally like bold graphics, contrasting prints but have to remember that they are not to everyone’s taste. I like loud and proud and as monochrome as you can get, I feel it is more striking.

What are your plans for the future?
I have a few more baby products I would like to make and sell, but it’s one baby product step at a time at the moment!

What is your favourite thing about sewing?
I love creating, it gets me excited.  I’m so happy to see something come from nothing and then seeing it in it's completed form. To have people use my product is like a dream come true, that they believe in me and the reviews I’ve been receiving are just the icing on the cake.

What is your least favourite thing about sewing or your biggest challenge?
My biggest challenge and least favourite thing about sewing is getting the tension right on my Janome overlocker! Another challenge is dedicating enough time to sewing other items not just my baby seat covers.

Who inspires you?
I admire people who make baby moccasins so much. I tried making my daughter a couple of pairs and it is so tricky. There are loads of mommy moc makers on Instagram that do an amazing job. I love looking at handmade/homemade baby clothes and follow most baby clothes makers. There is an Irish baby designer called LinzyO who makes dresses for little girls and matching ones for their dolls. My daughter had one when she was little, it is beautiful and a fabulous idea for a gift.

What are your current favourite Girl Charlee fabrics?

1.  Black Mauve Scattered Spots is the softest material I have ever felt. It’s beautiful.
2. Isabel Stripe Fantasy is a favourite with my customers and I’m asked about it quite regularly.
3.  Pink Camouflage is amazing fabric to work with, lovely and soft.
4.
Red with Black Hearts is great as I like contrasting prints.
5.
Black Grey Ivory Stripe is another customer favourite, I'm asked about it all the time.

All the products are so soft and fabulous to work with and have the perfect qualities for baby products (aswell as adult clothing!).
