Book Review: Sewing With Knitted Fabrics by Wendy Ward (+ GIVEAWAY!)

Continuing our reviews of our favourite books about sewing with stretch fabrics, today we have the wonderful Wendy Ward and her book "Sewing with Knitted Fabrics".

Sewing with Knitted Fabrics (SWKF) is a bible for both inexperienced sewists and experts.  Wendy has 26 years experience sewing with knit fabrics!  Wendy has worked as a designer on her own fabulous patterns and for the fashion industry, and is also a renowned teacher under her MiY brand so she has an amazing array of experience, technical knowledge and practical know how!

SWKF covers all aspects of sewing with knit fabrics and as you would expect from such an experienced sewist, Wendy has lots of useful hints, tips and tricks to help you easily perfect your knit sewing skills.

The book starts with techniques, tools & equipment, sizing & measurements, knit fabrics (identifying, choosing, prepping, along with a really handy guide to copy and use when shopping for fabrics), how to read and prepare your patterns, and setting up your machine.

Wendy also shares her knowledge of specific aspects of sewing with knits, such as seams, stripe matching, hems, different stitches, edging, interfacing, elastics, shirring, and pressing.  This really is a comprehensive guide, written in clear, easy to understand language, with excellent illustrations and photos to guide you.

Alongside all this, the book contains 6 full size printed patterns with 20 different options/variants covering UK sizes 8 to 26.  With the book only costing £12.99, that's just 65p per design!

The six core garments are the Peak T-Shirt, Derwent Wide Leg Trousers, Winnats Tank, Monsal Lounge Pants, Kinder Cardigan & Longshaw Skirt.  If you are wondering where the names for Wendy's patterns come from for this book, they are all areas/walks in the Peak District!

Wendy's instructions are easy to understand with clear numbered stages and coordinating images (and really great tips boxes in grey!).  Wendy guides you through the basic make first, and then when your confidence is increased she shows you more intricate features, for example with the Peak T-Shirt you are shown the basic pattern, then the shirring detail, then the patchwork panel option.

Sewing With Knitted Fabrics is the perfect book for people new to sewing or new to sewing with knits, but also has enough advanced techniques for the more experienced sewist.  We love it!
Wendy's patterns cover all types of knit fabrics so you really can use any of our fabrics! A few of our favourite picks below which copy the classic muted tones used in Wendy's book -
