Great British Sewing Bee Episode 5

***WARNING*** SPOILER ALERT!!!

We are in the home straight, 10 amazing sewers have now become 5!  Last night's Sewing Bee was Reduce, Re-Use and Recycle week.

Although we're a fabric company, we heartily approve of
recycling, repurposing & scrap busting.  We recycle all our paper and cardboard and have less than 1% fabric waste (we bundle 1/4 metre cuts as Mystery Mixes, sell our Slightly Flawed Fabrics at a reduced rate and either use or recycle our fabric scraps to reduce landfill.

Patrick said in the episode that home sewers waste about 30% of all the fabric they buy and there are many options for reducing your fabric waste.

We have lots of tutorials for small cuts and scrap busting - Headbands, Wristbands, Wreaths, Tassles & Fabric Art, Necklaces, Sunglasses Pouches, Shirt Scarfs, Dog Toys & Candle Holders, Booties, Balloon Animals, Floor Poufs, Rag Rugs, Cushions and of course underwear!  You can also recycle fabric rather than throwing it in the bin, ReusefulUK have a handy locator for your nearest scrap fabric recycling facility HERE.

The challenges this week were a pussy bow blouse (recycling existing garments), a scrap busting garment made from offcuts from previous challenges, and a dress using repurposed fabrics.

Our highlight garments of the episode were Janet's pretty pussy bow blouse, Riccardo's patchwork party dress and Juliet's stunning net curtain dress.
We love Mercedes, she cut her own path in the show and produced some amazing garments.  We were sad to see her go, a very talented sewer but not the best at following instructions!

Our quotes of the episode -

"There is a whole catalogue of new and exciting errors that they've brought to this challenge."
"Well you're a horrible pair of tricksters and I want no further part in it!"
"They're not happy gatherings."
"Time to think about Panickings, I don't know about Mannequins!"
"Bring your pussy bows forward, let's see if any of them need to go to the vet."

Our image of the episode is Joe's fabric angel!

Next week is British and Irish fabrics week, we can't wait!

Great British Sewing Bee Episode 4

***WARNING*** SPOILER ALERT!!!

Last night's Sewing Bee was technical week and boy was it technical!!!  The challenges were really... challenging!

Alongside the 3 challenges (swimsuit, dog outfit and luxury tracksuit) we saw a new type of stretch fabric... Lycettra! Pattern matching may be an issue though...

Our highlight garments were Janet's swimsuit (we thought she deserved to win, especially with all the help and advice she gave the other contestants during this challenge), Juliet's dog outfit and Riccardo's tracksuit.
It was very sad to see Alexei leave but we felt he was ready to go as he had struggled with a few of the challenges recently.  That's not to take anything away from him as he has only been sewing for 2 years and is sewing with a disability (MS).  A true inspiration to men, people with disability, and engineers!

Our quotes of the episode -

"There's a lot that goes into a swimsuit, especially if you are my aunt Maureen."
"It's very camel toey."
"Snipping off the threads feels a little bit like rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic."

"It's going to be a bit more Primark than Couture."

Our image of the episode has to be the new star of the show, Winston! How cute is that bow tie?!

Week 5 is all about recycling and scrap busting, so if you are in the need of some inspiration for our fabulous Mystery Mix packs, this should be the episode for you!

If you've been inspired to make your own swimsuit or activewear, we have a lovely selection of fabrics and patterns HERE

Great British Sewing Bee Episode 3

***WARNING*** SPOILER ALERT!!!

Last night's Sewing Bee was 70s week, featuring flares, punk fashion and the ubiquitous maxi dress (still popular today!)

There was an an interesting feature about the history of bell bottoms from Amber Butchart.

Our highlight garments were Jen's Flares, Jen's Punk outfit and Alexei's Maxi Dress (although he was lucky that the fit was so good without trying it on his "dummy... I mean model, she's alive!"

As well as this beautiful bee on Mercedes' nail, we're starting to notice some plasters appearing (Leah & Riccardo) so we hope no-one has injured themselves too badly (I cut the tip of my finger off with a rotary cutter this week!)
It's getting more emotional saying goodbye to our new friends and this week was especially hard as we really loved Ben's creative flair, which unfortunately may have been his downfall as he always pushed the envelope and never played it safe, which we really admire.

Our quotes of the episode -

"You two are probably too young to remember the seventies, no, I'm joking of course, you're both ancient!" (Joe to Patrick and Esme)
"Are you an anarchist?" "No, I'm an engineer." (Joe and Alexei)
"I wouldn't wear it to church" (Patrick on one of the punk outfits)
"That's nice, I'm pleased with these, this is the bell end on the sleeve" (Janet, to many giggles from the other sewers)

Image of the episode has to be Patrick and Esme pogoing! -

Week 4 is all about technical fabrics so it should be even more challenging than what we have seen so far which has already been very difficult!
